• Wellington College Jakarta to start with early years and preparatory programmes before expanding to full K-12 curriculum
  • Jakarta school to be located in premium lifestyle mall in upscale Simatupang district
  • Wellington College Jakarta will combine best of British education with Asian strengths and traditions

11 January 2024 – Wellington College, a leading English boarding school that has been ranked as the highest achieving International Baccalaureate (IB) school in the UK, will open in Jakarta in September 2024 through a partnership with Singapore businessman Peter Lim.

Wellington College International Regional Management (WCIRM), Mr Lim’s company, said the exclusive Wellington College Jakarta will start out as an early years and preparatory school located in the upscale, urban Simatupang district in South Jakarta before expanding to a full K- 12 curriculum, and moving to a bigger campus.

Wellington College Jakarta aims to become the top school in the region, one that combines the best of British education with regional and pan-Asian education strengths and traditions, said Wellington College International (WCI), Mr Lim’s partner in the venture.

The school will be staffed by highly qualified teachers trained in the UK on the British curriculum, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. It will join the expanding Wellington College International family of schools in China, Thailand and India.

Both WCIRM and WCI announced last year that they plan to set up schools in three Southeast Asia countries, namely Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Mr Lim said: “We are delighted with the progress made for Wellington College’s entry into one of Southeast Asia’s fastest growing economies. Expatriates and local residents in Indonesia can soon send their children to a school that has a strong reputation not just for academics but also in sports.

“Building on Wellington College’s all-round excellence, the Jakarta school will be able to equip students with essential skills to shape a better future for themselves.”

Mr Lim added that other potential locations for expansion in Indonesia include Bali, where two sites have been secured, and Surabaya.

Scott Bryan, Managing Director, WCI, added: “Jakarta is a dynamic and exciting city. It is an excellent location to bring into the Wellington College family of schools. We are fortunate to have high quality partners with each of our schools around the world and a really strong network of support to help them flourish. WCI is excited and privileged to have Mr. Peter Lim and his team as partners.”

Kampus International, a UK architect firm which specialises in the design of international schools, has been engaged to design the Jakarta school which will be located in a premium lifestyle mall.

As for Malaysia, Mr Lim is excited with developments in the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System, which is scheduled for completion in 2026. He said WCI and WCIRM are looking into plans to establish a Wellington College in the Iskandar area. In addition, Kuala Lumpur has emerged as a potential site for a second school in Malaysia, ensuring greater accessibility to quality British education in the country.

Wellington College was inaugurated by Queen Victoria in 1859 and established in Crowthorne, a small town set in the picturesque Berkshire countryside about an hour’s drive west of London.

Wellington College is also known for its achievements in arts and sports, having clinched national titles in hockey, rugby and squash, among others.

Wellington College students from the UK and international schools regularly attain placement at the world’s leading universities including both Oxbridge and Ivy League. Notable alumni include novelist George Orwell, actor Sir Christopher Lee, architect Sir Nicholas Grimshaw, former cabinet ministers, and athletes including F1 champion James Hunt, high jumper Morgan Lake, and women’s rugby player Sophie Ragg.
